Green Aiders is a successful and rewarding scheme designed to help elderly and disabled adults take back control of their gardens. The initiative is led by Groundwork Hertfordshire, the county’s leading community and environmental charity.
The Green Aiders project helps people who are unable to maintain their garden or afford a gardener, to get their garden to a manageable state with help from friendly local volunteers. The scheme aims to help vulnerable people feel more secure in their homes as statistics show that homes with overgrown gardens are more likely to become victims of crime. The service promotes independent living and can reduce social isolation by signposting residents to other relevant services.
Volunteers get the opportunity to meet new people and do something worthwhile for their community, while gaining skills and training and getting some exercise with lots of fresh air!
Groundwork has already helped improve over 100 gardens across Hertfordshire since the scheme began in 2009 and is now able to continue this much needed project in Dacorum thanks to funding from Hertfordshire County Council – Community Well Being.
Do you know someone who could benefit from up to 3 hours gardening assistance? Would you like to become a GreenAider yourself and help your neighbours to maintain their independence and ensure they are able continue to enjoy their gardens? If so, please contact Heather Lever at Groundwork Hertfordshire on 01707 255171 or heather.lever@groundwork.org.uk.
